An ode to my Earth, your celebrated day is one week away. You will celebrate your 40th anniversary this year, and rubies shall glitter the ground in your honor! (The traditional anniversary gift the 40th anniversary is rubies – which is also my mom’s birthstone, just so you know)
Why do we only celebrate our Earth for one day each year? While I am a firm believer that the activities that take place in that one day make a huge difference – why not a month? Why not all year?!
Wait just a minute, I am mistaken. While it isn’t a nation-wide recognized month, there are several regions and individual corporations that have designated Earth “Month.”
In fact, the Sun Times reported that Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois is scheduled to announce on April 22, otherwise known as Earth Day, that Earth Month will be adopted. During this announcement he will also announce the Environmental Hero Awards.
The region of Mid-Columbia has designated the month of April as Earth Month. They have set up a community pledge and goals for a greener mindset in their area. Check out their website to see if there is anything you can do in your community! From educational programs to environmental challenges for the whole family to a park clean-up, there has to be something to initiate! I really love their pledge, it is a such a great way to involve people and remind them they are accountable for the world around them.
Aveda salons raise funds for environmental projects around the world. Since 1990 they have designated the month of April to concentration on a specific cause. Their efforts have helped to preserve habitats, raise awareness about global warming, and to provide access to clean water. To date this year, they have raised over $3.5 million. Kudos.
Do you know another community or company celebrating our Earth all month long?!
Send it my way via a comment and I’ll be happy to share it with all GTB readers!
A TOAST:
Here’s to the day you said “I do…”
a happy memory.
Here’s to all you’ve shared since then
and all that’s yet to be.

and here’s to all of us who helped along the way!
