Do you travel? Do you want to travel? Do you stay in hotels when you do it?
yep. That is what I thought.
Well, I am not a number cruncher – but imagine how much energy/water/waste/money/etc. go into the sheets that are placed on the beds and the towels in the bathrooms. What about the shampoo, soap, and lotions that sit on the counter? Or the newspaper delivered each morning?
I can’t even count that high!
Lucky for us, our favorite hotels are “greenin’ ” up their act…plus, it has caught on to the government level.
Florida has a formal Green Lodging program in place. This is a program where the state evaluates hotels in the areas of water conservation, energy conservation, waste reduction, and clean air practices. The property must meet a minimum criteria in each area in order to qualify as a Green Lodging facility. The bonus…state contracts are only authorized to stay at properties that are a certified Florida Green Lodging Program establishment. The program was recently modified due to budget constraints, but it is still a very important certification to hold hoteliers and guests responsible for what they contribute to our Earth.
As for the soap, shampoo, lotion, and other amenities, the Clean The World Organization has a solution for that! This a non-profit organization that collects used soap from hotels in Central Florida, breaks it down & then delivers it to third world countries suffering from disease caused by a lack of proper handwashing procedures.
How does it work? Well, soap that has only been used up to 35% (how many times have you ever used the soap in a hotel without it immediately being changed to a new bar?) gets scraped down to a new layer and tossed in the hot pot; if the soap has been used 75%, it goes straight to the melter. From here all the soap gets melted down to an exorbanent degree to be sanitized and then it is re-molded into 2 oz bars. These soap bars can provide one person 3 days of clean hands in a country that suffers from sanitary conditions!
Plus, HELLO?!, none of this soap goes into the landfills now!!!
I just love it!

Floridas’ green lodging sounds like an excelent idea and they are backing it up with action.
There is to much waste in the travel sector.
In europe many hotels have dropped soap bars for example and just go with dispensed liquid soap etc.
