Did you know it only takes 28 days to change a habit or to change the way you think about something? 28 days. That means you could change your habit a little more than 12 times in a year, and approximately 1,200 times a lifetime (yes, I am saying that I will live to be 100 years old).
So, why is it so hard?! Why can’t you just turn off the lights when you leave a room? WHY?! If you made yourself conscious about it for just 28 days it wouldn’t be a challenge anymore. I am using this new found knowledge of 28 days for several projects.
Project #1: exercise regularly. I am exercising everyday for 28 days to make sure that it becomes a daily habit. It has been difficult so far, but I am doing it.
Project #2: eating more locally grown foods. I just found a fantastic market in my hood that features locally grown seasonal produce as well as a seperate entrance for locally humanely grown meats. Plus, they have a fro-yo stand, it really isn’t a challenge to coax me somewhere that frozen yogurt is, especially when they sell fresh berries next door. I just have to remember to take that route home each week instead of my standard grocery chain.
Some other tried & true habits that are proven to make your life a little more green include:
- Investing in your reusuable water bottle (and filling it), a reusable lunch bag (and bringing lunch with you)
- Consider doing all of your errands on your way to or from work to avoid additional gas pollution
- Only run the dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load – don’t have a full load? wait it out.
It is hard at first, but you will get through the first few days and be well on your way to creating a positive habit for yourself and your Earth. I would highly recommend writing your personal 28-day challenges down & tracking your success. This will definitely help you to maintain consciousness of what your goal is as well as why it is important to you.

28 days, that is all it takes. I have to go jogging now.
